What is L-Tryptophan ?

L-Tryptophan, which is technically pure (L-Tryptophan 98% Feed Grade) comes under Regulation (CE) 1831/2003 of 22/09/2003 relating to additives which are intended for animal feed (Official Journal of the EU n° L 268 of 18/10/2003), category: “nutritional additives”, additive group: “amino acids, their salts and analogous products” and can be used for all animal species

Tryptophan is not only involved in maintenance and lean body tissue accretion, it functions in a number of metabolic pathways that regulate behavior, appetite and gastric activity. For instance, research has demonstrated that Tryptophan increases the expression and excretion of Ghrelin, a 28 amino acid peptide that is produced and secreted by the stomach and duodenum; this peptide acts on the brain by stimulating feed intake. In another endocrine-like manner, serotonin is produced from Tryptophan and is converted to melatonin. While serotonin stimulates smooth muscle contraction along the gastrointestinal tract, melatonin stimulates and synchronizes the processes that are associated with feeding, digestion and gastric emptying. Finally, Tryptophan is a precursor to niacin, a water-soluble vitamin that is
involved in many oxidative reactions in the Kreb cycle.Because Tryptophan constitutes a relatively small portion of protein in most feed ingredients, it can become limiting in companion and commercial livestock diets. As with L-Lysine, LThreonine and DL-Methionine (or analog), L-Tryptophan can be used to balance the amino acid content of the diet and meet the dietary Tryptophan requirements of both domesticated pets and production animals.

Keep the balance of amino acids in the forage and stimulate the growth of the animals;

Improve the meat quality;
Increase the nutritive value of forage raw materials which have low amino acid digestibility;

Apply to the production low-protein forage;

Cut down the cost of raw materials for forage;

Decrease the nitrogen content in the excrement and urine of animals so that the release of ammonia is slowed and the ammonia concentration is kept low in animal shed.

Considering L-Tryptophan playing a key role in growth performance and feed efficiency, it is recommended to add in diet to achieve the optimal amino acid balance and fulfill the digestible L-Tryptophan requirement of animals, especially piglets, sows and poultry etc.
